History of Hinge

The hinge, which is used in almost every item in everyday life, has a history dating back thousands of years. It is almost impossible to say when the hinge was first found, but it is estimated that the Hittites were the first nation to use it widely. The Hittites used hinges as early as 1600 BC. Of course, the first hinges were made of tahata.

After the Hittites, the Roman Empire moved from doors to furniture. In Rome, the hinge was considered a tremendous tool and was associated with “Cardea”, the goddess of flexibility.

In the Middle Ages, the hinge was introduced to iron and began to resemble its present structure a little bit. The shape of the hinge as we know it today was formed during the industrial revolution.
